The Hermitage Needs Your Support

Geodesic dome at the Hermitage.Would you like to help the Hermitage benefit all who wish to lead a spiritual life?

When traveling in Asia and the far East, wherever Buddhism is the norm, one cannot help but note the frequent presence of Temples, their beautiful roofs shining in the sun. People in the West however, are still largely oblivious to the tremendous benefits that these monastic or semi-monastic establishments afford to the communities around them. The quiet life of the resident nuns and monks as they go about their spiritual lives gives to the surrounding neighborhood a deep and sacred serenity rarely found in occidental society. Just as the physical environment of the planet needs careful tending, our world’s spiritual environment likewise must be attended to. A Buddhist Hermitage is a place where meditation permeates the landscape with peace and well-being. Our lives on this planet require us to be nourished by spiritual endeavor and a meditation centre is a place where individuals pursue personal awakening. These are meaningful reasons to support a Hermitage centre here in the Americas.

The Hermitage is in a perfect location: situated in an island environment just off the West Coast of Canada, with generally pleasant weather year-round, and within comfortable reach by road or plane. This stunningly beautiful 60-acre property consists of gentle meadows bounded by thick forest, affording beauty, quietude and privacy.

Weekly meditation and classes are ongoing at the present time. We also run meditation retreats throughout the summer and fall seasons. Following the monastic principles of the East, we do not charge a fixed fee for anyone wishing to attend meditation at the centre. Everything is run on a strictly donation basis!

The Hermitage has been granted charitable status by the Government of Canada, which means we can issue tax receipts for donations.

We are pleased with what we have achieved so far on donations alone. In addition to costs associated with classes and retreats, the Dharma Fellowship is also paying a mortgage on the property, and planning to farm the land and construct additional buildings (namely, retreat accommodations and kutirs, or meditation huts). Our budget requires that we raise $500,000 over the next three years. Can you help?

If you can help us in a larger way, we truly need your backing. Become a patron of the Dharma Fellowship of His Holiness the Gyalwa Karmapa and support the important spiritual work that we are performing. Your highly respected, most honourable patronage is very much needed.
